Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana Donates $500,000 to Gary Animal Shelter

The construction of the new Gary Animal Care facility has received a half-million dollar donation from Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana.

The City of Gary received a $500,000 cheque from the casino run by Hard Rock International, a division of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, last week. The $1.4 million animal shelter will be designed and built with the support of $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (COVID-19 relief monies).

"This generous contribution from Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana demonstrates their continued commitment to being a true community partner,” said Mayor Eddie Melton. “This project will allow us to provide compassionate, modern care for animals while improving essential city services. Hard Rock’s support is helping us turn a long‑standing need into a transformative investment for our residents and our city.”

According to a statement from Steve Segura, Gary's chief communications officer, the city's badly dilapidated Animal Control facility will be replaced by the new Gary Animal Care. The remaining $400,000 will be raised through a campaign drive sponsored by Silverstray Social, a nonprofit that offers free animal care to pet families in need of financial support, as well as current allocations to animal shelters. 

The Indiana Casino Industry Is Dominated by Hard Rock

May 2021 saw the opening of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana. About 35 minutes southeast of Chicago lies the $300 million, 200,000-square-foot casino and entertainment venue.

Due to its enormous success, Hard Rock Northern Indiana has taken the lead in the Indiana casino industry. The casino's 1,700 slot machines and 80 live dealer table games brought in $444.3 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) during the state's 2025 fiscal year. That was more than $100 million more than Horseshoe Indianapolis, which came in second with $332.2 million.

In addition to the casino, Hard Rock Northern Indiana features five restaurants, the most notable of which is Council Oak Steaks & Seafood. A Hard Rock retail store, two independent pubs and lounges, and the almost 2,000-seat Hard Rock Live performance venue are all located on the property.

Coming Convention Center 

The Gary Casino will see significant changes in the upcoming years. A $100 million convention facility next to Hard Rock Northern Indiana is being developed by the Lake County Board of Supervisors.

The project consists of a 300-room hotel that is immediately connected to the casino and 145,000 square feet of conference space. Through a $1.5 million yearly subsidy for 20 years, or $30 million, Hard Rock is contributing to the cost of the convention center complex.

Gary is still a long way from becoming the Chicago Bears' next home. To entice the NFL franchise to Northwest Indiana, the city launched a campaign in January called "The Ultimate Comeback Story," offering a plethora of tax breaks.

A 400-acre Bears stadium from Hard Rock, Northern Indiana, east of Burr Street, has been designed by the City of Gary.
