Flight Centre Canada: Canadians Cool on U.S. Travel
Recently, there has been a lot of discussion regarding the increase in Canadians canceling trips to the United States, particularly to casino-oriented locations such as Nevada and New Jersey.
Canadians Choosing More European Trips
Flight Centre Canada is a top travel agency in the country, featuring more than 200 locations across the nation, providing travel services such as flights, cruises, vacation packages, tours, hotels, and car rentals.
The company released a report last week that further supported the story regarding Canadians and travel to the U.S.
As reported by Flight Centre Canada, reservations for places such as California, Florida, and New York fell for the fifth consecutive month, a trend also seen in a July statement from Statistics Canada.
“Canadians are swapping quick trips for lifestyle-driven travel choices,” says Amra Durakovic, Flight Centre spokesperson. “From Lisbon to Tokyo, we’re seeing familia U.S. favourites take a backseat.”
Trump Tariffs Influential Element
This is closely connected to the situation in Las Vegas, which experienced a halt to a four-month decline, as June casino earnings on the Strip were favorable for the first time since January. Nonetheless, Las Vegas experienced an 11.3% decrease in visitor numbers in June compared to the prior year. The decline in tourism has been fueled by sharp price hikes everywhere, with travelers resisting inflated resort charges, $100 buffets, and $9 coffees.
"[Las Vegas] has long been a go-to for celebrations, entertainment and convenience. But with 76% of Canadians saying they’d consider less-crowded destinations, travellers are now spending their dollars more thoughtfully—sometimes swapping long-time favourites for somewhere new,” she said.
Factors contributing to the decline of Canadians visiting the U.S. include the weaker Canadian dollar and trade uncertainty from a tariff dispute, although Durakovic also highlighted a rising interest in seeking new experiences. A recent YouGov poll for Flight Centre shows that Canadians are focused on valuable experiences: 56% travel to immerse in new cultures, 52% seek nature retreats, and 58% aim to unwind.
Regardless of whether it's a local beach getaway or an extended overseas journey, travelers desire to feel that their time and finances are invested wisely, Durakovic.
Increased Number of Individuals Reserving Cruises
Globally, Europe remains a preferred option, with Athens, Dublin, London, and Paris at the forefront. Durakovic mentioned that Flight Centre is experiencing an increase in interest for trips to Argentina, Australia, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea, due to improved air connectivity and a stronger Canadian dollar compared to those currencies.
Cruising is also increasing—42% of Canadians indicate they are inclined to choose a cruise vacation this year. Mediterranean cruises are highly sought after, particularly in Greece, Italy, Morocco, and Spain, while trips around the British Isles, Galápagos Islands, and the South Pacific are steadily gaining popularity.
Durakovic suggests that it's not about distancing from the U.S., but rather about seeking out options beyond the typical preferences.
